Abstract
Objective: The oral health status of persons with physical disability, mental weakness, visual and audial disability, mental
handicap, and affection autism could be poor due to the challenges involved in control of the disabilities. The data base for
oral health of handicapped persons in Korea is currently limited and consequently, it is difficult to establish a suitable oral
health policy. Thus, it is important to set more available data for oral health status in Korea, based on the classification of disabilities by age group.

Methods: About 1,316 handicapped persons in Korea were examined for oral status by direct observation and image analysis of oral status.

Results: Periodontal status and oral hygiene status were analyzed based on the age group and the classification of disabilities. The results indicated that the periodontal status of the disabled was affected by the type of disability. The average S-PHP index was estimated as 2.18¡¾1.15, PMA index as 10.15¡¾6.39, and CPI index as 1.91¡¾0.70.

Conclusion: The survey data provides a basis for establishing the oral health policy for persons with disabilities in Korea.
Development of a customized oral health care program for each type of disability is needed.
